One thing that I always love to have on hand, but often lose would be a cute scrunchie. Going to the store you can often find various packs of cute hair ties, but they don’t always come in matching pairs. They also can be pricey sometimes costing twelve dollars for three. If you have a passion for accessorizing or just want to match your fuzzy pal these DIY scrunchies are for you! They also make great gifts for Valentines Day as well! Following, will be a list of materials and a step-by-step guide on how to create one for yourself. Lastly, a cost analysis on materials to product will explain how it is more sustainable to make these at home.
Materials:
- Fuzzy Yarn (I suggest the Lion Brand Go For Faux yarn I use both the thick and regular)
- Hair Ties (size preference is up to the individual you can use small, regular, or the ones for thick hair)
- Scissors
- A hot glue gun
- Hot Glue
Note: Adult supervision is recommended for craft projects using hot glue
- Optional: Tinsel yarn
Note: Tinsel is dangerous for cats and dogs to ingest adult supervision is recommended
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut your yarn around 31 inches.
Note: If you use tinsel cut it the same length
Step 2: Tie your yarn to the hair tie leaving little space (see as pictured below)
Note: If you use tinsel line it up and tie it with the faux yarn
Step 3: Wrap the yarn around the hair tie looping it (see as indicated below)
Step 4: Repeat step 3 until your hair tie has little space left and push (as displayed below)
Step 5: Continue repeating step 3 until you come to the other end and tie both ends of yarn together (see as pictured below)
Step 6: Hot Glue Gun ends to the scrunchie. (be careful if you press the ends down to not burn yourself)
Optional: Prior to hot gluing ends you can trim the ends if they are too long
Step 7: Let hot glue dry and then enjoy.
Cost Analysis:
Observing the cost of hair ties, one may note that the small ones cost $.07 per product unit, and the regular size costs around $.13 per product unit. The Go For Faux Yarn by Lion Brand costs $6.99 per skein. Each skein of yarn excluding the sparkle ones are sixty meters. Therefore, assuming one uses 31 inches of material per hair tie, one could create around 76 hair ties from said material. Realistically, one is not going to make this many, however you can always pass the yarn and instructions on to a friend, or hold on to the excess to create more as needed. Assuming one uses materials from around the house such as hair ties that are laying around and their trusty hot glue gun the price should be much cheaper than competitors sold in stores.
So if this is a craft project that interests you, or you just want to save a few dollars and customize your scrunchies to your liking make sure to try it out! Make sure to check out some of the previous blogs and be on the lookout for more DIYs.
